Katy Hawkins

Katy Hawkins is Director of Shiné Yoga: Mind/Body/Spirit, in Northwest Philadelphia. Recognizing the limits of the rational brain - and the limits of adjunct professorship in feeding her kids - she abandoned her academic career. As a one-time (sub-par) dancer, she has always been fascinated by the body's different ways of processing ideas and imagery. She began teaching somatic explorations of poetic theme in yoga studios in Philly. She is no expert on trauma therapy - or on race (her interest stems from growing up in racially and socio-economically diverse public schools, training as a diversity mediator, her graduate work in Africana Studies, and her experiences of relationship building and repair over the years). But she is responding to the call that we all, however clumsily, do our damaged best to contribute to the healing of our country.
